Can Bitcoin Be Hacked? Elon Musk Questions Grok About Quantum Threats

In a recent exchange on X, Elon Musk posed a pressing question to Grok—X’s AI chatbot—about the future of Bitcoin’s security. His concern centered on the rise of quantum computing and whether it could compromise the encryption that underpins Bitcoin.

The inquiry followed IBM's announcement of its ambitious plan to develop a powerful quantum computer, codenamed “Blue Jay,” by 2033. This system aims to achieve quantum supremacy, raising questions about the safety of current cryptographic systems.$SOL

Grok responded with reassurance. It stated that Bitcoin remains secure for now, estimating that the probability of quantum computers breaking Bitcoin’s SHA-256 encryption by 2030 is under 1%, and still less than 10% by 2035. The reason: today’s quantum computers are not nearly strong enough. With only around 1,000 noisy qubits available, the gap to the millions needed is still vast.

However, Grok noted that cryptographic evolution is expected. Algorithms like SHA-3 or SHA-512 could eventually replace SHA-256, future-proofing Bitcoin and similar digital assets against quantum advances.
