Quantum Threats vs. Blockchain – A New Line Drawn
Major cryptographic breakthrough announced by Sui Research could help blockchains survive the coming quantum era – but Bitcoin and Ethereum are left out.
What happened?
A team led by cryptographer Kostas Chalkias has proposed a backward-compatible, quantum-safe wallet upgrade — no hard forks, no address changes, no key regeneration required.
Works for:
• $SUI
• $SOL
• $NEAR
• $Cosmos
(Any chain using EdDSA)
Doesn’t work for:
• Bitcoin
• Ethereum
(Both still reliant on older cryptographic signatures.)
Why it matters:
Once quantum computers reach “supremacy,” millions of wallets – including Satoshi Nakamoto’s BTC – could be instantly compromised if public keys are visible.
Key Insight:
This solution uses zero-knowledge proofs to validate new quantum-resistant keys without revealing old ones, preserving privacy AND security.
“Millions of dormant wallets could be drained instantly in a post-quantum world,” says Chalkias.
“This is the first real path to upgrade blockchains without breaking them,” adds Dan Dadybayo.
For Bitcoin/Ethereum: A hard fork may be inevitable if they want to remain secure in the quantum era.
TL;DR:
A new cryptographic solution may future-proof next-gen blockchains.. but the original giants might be forced to make the biggest upgrade of their lives.
