🇨🇳 CHINA SUMMONS NVIDIA OVER H20 AI CHIP SECURITY RISKS

Tensions are rising again in US-China tech relations after China’s Cyberspace Administration (CAC) summoned Nvidia representatives over alleged security vulnerabilities in its H20 AI chips. Authorities claim the chips may contain remotely activated location-tracking capabilities—a charge Nvidia has not publicly addressed.

This comes shortly after the US lifted its April ban on Nvidia’s H20 chip exports to China, allowing both Nvidia and AMD to swiftly reenter the Chinese AI chip market. The reversal was seen as a step forward in thawing trade relations, especially following bilateral talks in Stockholm.

However, backlash in Washington has reignited. Representative John Moolenaar warned that the H20 chip could significantly advance China’s AI and military capabilities. In a letter to Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, he demanded transparency over the export license process and shipment figures, with an August 8 deadline.

Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang stated that while no shipments have been approved yet, he remains optimistic. Still, lawmakers are pressing for clarity amid fears that broader Chinese access could tilt the global AI race in Beijing’s favor.
