A clear law criminalizing the use of digital currencies in Algeria
Issue number 48 of the official gazette includes a new law numbered 25-10, issued on July 24, 2025, which includes substantial amendments to law 05-01 related to the prevention of money laundering and the funding of terrorism and combating it. The amended text introduces clear and explicit provisions that criminalize any form of dealing, trading, or mining of virtual and digital currencies at the national level.
The new law does not only criminalize the individual or commercial use of currencies such as 'Bitcoin' or 'Tether' (USDT), but expands the prohibition to include mining, production, and distribution operations, in addition to dealing with digital platforms or electronic wallets associated with these currencies.
