The largest Martian meteorite ever found on Earth, weighing 25kg, is set for auction at Sotheby’s New York on July 16 with an estimated value of $4 million.
Called NWA 16788, the 15-inch rock was discovered in Niger’s Sahara Desert in 2023 after traveling 225 million miles from Mars. It’s 70% larger than any other Martian meteorite and makes up 6.5% of all Martian material on Earth.
Scientists worry the sale to private collectors could limit access to this rare research material.
