Tesla may begin its first deliveries in India as early as August, as the company announced plans to open its first showroom in the country on Tuesday. According to sources familiar with the situation, Elon Musk's company plans to take advantage of potential demand in the region.

In recent months, Tesla has reported a decline in sales of its electric vehicles. However, given India's status as the third-largest automotive market in the world, the company may leverage the region to combat declining sales in other markets.

The opening of a showroom in Mumbai will mark Tesla's official entry into the market, allowing potential customers to familiarize themselves with available models and learn their prices.
Tesla plans to begin deliveries in India by August
According to documents reviewed by Bloomberg and a source wishing to remain anonymous, the showroom is expected to provide potential customers with a sufficient number of options after its opening. However, according to another source familiar with the situation, deliveries are expected to begin at the end of August. The source added that customers will be able to configure and order Tesla electric vehicles as early as next week.
Earlier in March, it was reported that the company had finalized the lease for its first showroom in Mumbai. Last month, Bloomberg reported that the Mumbai showroom was gradually preparing to open this month, and the first batch of vehicles—rear-wheel-drive Model Y SUVs shipped from Tesla's factory in China—should arrive in the country soon.
According to reports, the price of Tesla vehicles was set at 2.7 million rupees ($31,988) with an import duty of about 2.1 million rupees. This duty corresponds to the standard tariff of 705, charged by India, plus additional duties on imported vehicles costing less than $40,000.

The company has already begun hiring employees several months ago, ramping it up in recent weeks in anticipation of the opening scheduled for next week. The decline in global sales is pushing the electric vehicle manufacturer to enter the Indian market
Model Y remains the best-selling electric vehicle in the world, and its popularity in India will contribute to its adoption, despite high import duties. According to a statement by CFO Vaibhav Tanedji, released during a conference call following the first quarter, the issue of duties was one of the key factors Tesla considered when planning its entry into the Indian market.

Sources also mentioned that the company is working on building another showroom, which is expected to be located in the New Delhi area. The second showroom will open closer to the end of July. Tesla's entry into the Indian market comes amid a decline in global sales for the company in the second quarter.
This decline contradicts Musk's claim that the company had recovered from the blow it suffered due to his cooperation with the Trump administration.

Last month, India's Minister of Heavy Industries Kumar Swamy confirmed that Tesla had shown no signs of intent to establish electric vehicle production in India. He added that the company had only shown interest in opening showrooms within the country. U.S. President Donald Trump has consistently opposed the potential establishment of Tesla manufacturing facilities in India, stating that such a move would be extremely unfair.

Tesla has also had limited participation in electric vehicle manufacturing programs in India. Although the electric vehicle manufacturer attended the first stakeholder meeting related to the electric vehicle manufacturing development scheme in India, it did not attend the two subsequent consultation sessions.

However, the company is expected to send a representative to subsequent meetings after the showroom opens next week.
