Investing.com -- The European Union will not sign a joint commitment on climate actions with China at the upcoming summit commemorating 50 years of diplomatic relations, according to statements from EU climate commissioner Wopke Hoekstra published on Monday.

Brussels rejected numerous requests from Beijing for mutual climate commitments following the summit between the world's second and third largest economies.

EU officials indicated that they would agree to such a declaration only if China takes on stricter commitments to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

"From our point of view, the declaration makes sense only if it addresses specific issues and demonstrates ambitions," said Hoekstra to the Financial Times.

Disagreements over climate commitments arise as the two economic powers prepare to mark half a century of diplomatic relations at a summit this month.
