#BinanceLeadsQ1 The Belgian banking group KBC announced its plans to allow retail customers to trade Bitcoin and Ethereum through its investment platform Bolero starting this fall. This move marks the first time a major Belgian bank has directly entered the cryptocurrency market, breaking the barrier that has long separated traditional banks from decentralized digital assets.
Why now?
This move comes amid increasing interest in cryptocurrencies in Belgium, especially among younger investors. A recent survey by the Financial Services and Markets Authority revealed that 43% of Belgian investors under 29 are already investing in cryptocurrencies.
The KBC decision comes alongside the implementation of the new EU Crypto Asset Markets Regulation (MiCA), which aims to set uniform standards for crypto asset service providers across the bloc. This regulation aims to level the playing field and enhance oversight, particularly regarding compliance with anti-money laundering, providing a clearer regulatory framework for banks to enter this space.
What will KBC offer?
KBC is currently awaiting regulatory approval to operate as a crypto asset service provider. KBC confirms that its offering will focus on:

Until now, Belgian investors had to use international platforms such as Coinbase and Binance, or digital banks like Revolut and Bunq to access the cryptocurrency market. With KBC's entry, investors will be able to access digital assets within a trusted framework from their main banking institution.
