Former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, currently in self-imposed exile in India, has been sentenced to six months in prison for contempt of court by the country’s International Crimes Tribunal (ICT).
The verdict was delivered in her absence on Wednesday by a three-member bench led by Justice Golam Mortuza Mozumder. According to Chief Prosecutor Muhammad Tajul Islam, the sentence will take effect once Hasina is arrested or surrenders voluntarily.
Hasina left the country last August following a student-led uprising and now faces multiple charges. This is the first official sentence against her.
Also sentenced in the same case was Shakil Akand Bulbul, a senior member of the now-banned student wing of the Awami League, Chhatra League. He received two months in prison.
This development could have major political consequences as tensions continue to rise in Bangladesh’s already divided political landscape.
