LEDGER NANO S IS RETIRED
Ledger has announced the official end of software updates for its Nano S hardware wallet, citing technical limitations that prevent further updates. Although the wallet, first launched in 2016, will continue to function for basic operations, users will no longer receive updates or new features. Charles Guillemet, Chief Technology Officer of Ledger, explained the reasoning behind this decision in a series of posts on X. Ledger had officially retired the Nano S in 2022 but continued to support it with minimal updates for almost another two years. Even though Ledger will no longer release updates, Nano S holders will still be able to perform basic transactions. In light of this transition, however, the company encourages users to upgrade to the Nano S Plus, launched in 2022, which includes expanded memory and compatibility with the latest app features. The announcement has generated mixed feedback on X. Some users have accused Ledger of planned obsolescence. Not all industry voices have shared this skepticism. Marc Zeller, a contributor to Aave, commented that phasing out support for obsolete hardware is common practice throughout the tech industry. However, he acknowledged that Ledger could have halted sales of the Nano S sooner to avoid confusion.
