#OneBigBeautifulBill President of the United States Donald Trump achieved a significant victory on Tuesday with a very narrow approval in the Senate for a colossal budget bill that includes funding for his immigration policies, tax exemptions, and cuts to medical coverage. After two days of marathon sessions, the result was very tight.
Despite a Republican majority with 53 out of 100 seats, the vote ended in a tie at 50-50, and Vice President JD Vance had to cast the deciding vote to support it, as required by the Constitution. This is further evidence of the strong opposition that has arisen, even within his own party.
The "beautiful and great" legislation, as Trump called it, will now return to the House of Representatives, where it faces rejection from Democrats and many Republicans who oppose drastic cuts.
The 79-year-old politician set July 4, the national holiday celebrating Independence Day, as a symbolic deadline for its enactment.
Deficit Explosion
The text estimates a massive extension of tax credits adopted during Trump's first term (2017-2021), eliminating taxes on tips and including billions of additional dollars for defense and immigration control.
Both experts and politicians estimate that this will increase the federal deficit. The Congressional Budget Office, which is responsible for impartial evaluations of the impact of legislation on public finances, estimates that this will increase the debt by more than 3 trillion dollars by 2034. To cover some of this, Republicans are expected to cut Medicaid, the public health insurance program relied upon by millions of low-income Americans. Also under consideration are cuts to the SNAP food assistance program and dismantling tax incentives for renewable energy adopted during the tenure of former Democratic President Joe Biden.
