On Monday, the Ethereum community group launched an on-chain “time capsule,” allowing users to store artwork, memories, messages, and predictions in encrypted smart contracts until the network's 11th anniversary next year.

The capsule, presented at the Ethereum community conference (EthCC) and supported by Protocol Guild and Shutter Network, allows anyone to send a file for about $2.50 in ETH. All proceeds will be donated to Protocol Guild to support core research. Shutter's threshold encryption will keep the records sealed from July 30 and will be opened a year later (on the 11th anniversary), when the contract will decrypt each file and permanently preserve it in the Ethereum ledger.

“Celebrating our history nourishes the culture and values of Ethereum,” said Jérôme de Tich, president of Ethereum-France and founder of EthCC. Protocol Guild participant “Cheeky Gorilla” called the capsule an opportunity to “reflect on progress while preparing for the next decade.”

Vitalik Buterin published the Ethereum whitepaper in 2013, introducing a programmable blockchain that would differ from Bitcoin and become the foundation of a new era of blockchain finance. The network launched in July 2015 after an initial public offering and now ranks second among the largest cryptocurrency blockchains with a market capitalization of nearly $300 billion. #ETH $ETH $ETH
