OpenAI stated that the Chinese artificial intelligence platform Cheb AI is gaining momentum amid Beijing's efforts to lead the world in artificial intelligence.

OpenAI announced on Wednesday that its analysts have observed significant progress by the Chinese startup Cheb AI in securing government contracts in several regions, indicating China's growing momentum in its quest for global leadership in artificial intelligence.

The developer of the ChatGPT application stated in its post that Cheb AI - backed by the Chinese Communist Party - aims to 'constrain Chinese systems and standards in emerging markets before competing American or European companies can, while offering a Chinese alternative for responsible, transparent, and audit-ready artificial intelligence.'

The company provides artificial intelligence solutions - including infrastructure for large sovereign language models and devices in partnership with Huawei - to governments and state-owned enterprises in Malaysia, Singapore, the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, and Kenya.

This initiative is part of China's broader efforts to build a self-sufficient and globally competitive artificial intelligence ecosystem, rivaling the United States while reducing dependence on American technology.

Cheb AI - which did not immediately respond to a request for comment - is backed by over $1.4 billion in government investments and maintains strong ties with the Chinese government and state-owned entities, according to OpenAI.

In January, the company was added to the U.S. Commerce Department's export control list, preventing it from purchasing American components.

Cheb AI positions itself among the leading artificial intelligence companies in China, alongside DeepMind, Alibaba, and ByteDance.

This report comes at a time when the United States and China are in intense competition in the rapidly evolving artificial intelligence landscape, as both countries vie for technological dominance.
