The Head of the TNI Information Center, Major General Kristomei Sianturi, stated that the USS Nimitz aircraft carrier belonging to the United States, which is passing through the Strait of Malacca towards the Indian Ocean, is allowed to transit without the permission of the coastal state, as long as it complies with international navigation rules and does not endanger regional security.
Foreign warships, including the USS Nimitz, are transiting under the Right of Innocent Passage in accordance with the provisions of UNCLOS 1982, which stipulates that warships can pass without permission from the coastal state.
Nevertheless, the TNI will monitor all foreign shipping activities in the area to ensure national security and stability.
Previously, the USS Nimitz was reported to have turned off its transponder and stopped sending location signals while passing through the waters of Indonesia and Malaysia on June 17, 2025, amid rising tensions between Iran and Israel.
