Cardano began development in 2015 and was launched in 2017 by Ethereum co-founder Charles Hoskinson.

Charles Hoskinson is a technology entrepreneur and mathematician from Colorado. He studied at the University of Denver and the University of Colorado Boulder.

Hoskinson first got involved with cryptocurrencies in 2011, starting with mining and trading. His first professional step into the world of cryptocurrencies was in 2013 when he developed a course on Bitcoin that was attended by over 80,000 students. He was the founding chair of the education committee of the Bitcoin Foundation and founded the Cryptocurrency Research Group in 2013.

Hoskinson, who helped launch the early development of Ethereum and founded the Ethereum Foundation, left these organizations to launch his own vision of a third-generation blockchain. Recognizing the scalability problem faced by traditional blockchains, the Cardano project was created in 2015 to pave a new way in blockchain.
