The attacks occurred amid latent tensions over the advancement of the Iranian nuclear program. For years, Israel had threatened a similar attack, and successive U.S. governments had tried to prevent it, fearing it would trigger a broader conflict in the Middle East and might ultimately be ineffective in destroying the dispersed and consolidated Iranian nuclear program.
Before the missiles struck Israel, Iran's Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, stated during a broadcast speech that Israel initiated a war and asserted that it would not be allowed to conduct lightning strikes without serious consequences; "the Armed Forces of Iran will use force and Israel will not be able to avoid responsibility for its crimes," Khamenei declared.
Meanwhile, French President Emmanuel Macron stated that his country could help Israel defend itself against an Iranian attack "if it is in a position to do so" during a press conference following the Israeli bombings against the Islamic Republic.
