Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated that the attacks were launched to destroy Iran's nuclear capabilities. But they also targeted military leaders, barracks, and missile facilities in Iran, in a wave of attacks across the country.

Israel's campaign against Hezbollah in Lebanon last year culminated in the assassination of most of its senior leaders. A major question is whether Israel's ultimate goal is to weaken the Iranian regime, and not just its nuclear program.
