Mark Zuckerberg questioned about stablecoin ambitions
Two Democratic senators, Elizabeth Warren and Richard Blumenthal, recently sent a letter to Mark Zuckerberg – requesting clarification on Meta's plans regarding stablecoin. The letter was issued in the context of the U.S. Senate preparing to vote on the GENIUS Act – an important law aimed at regulating stablecoin issuance.
The senators want to know what Meta is doing. In the letter, they highlighted several notable points:
- Has Meta held consultations about stablecoin in 2025? Is Meta influencing the construction of stablecoin legislation?
- Recall the failure of the previous Libra/Diem project – which faced strong opposition globally and was forced to be canceled.
- Concerns that Meta could leverage user transaction data for its own purposes if it self-issues stablecoin.
- Warning about the possibility that President Trump may favorably assist Meta in avoiding regulations applicable to stablecoin.
Currently, there are rumors that Meta is considering integrating stablecoins like USDT or USDC into its payment system. However, on May 8, communications director Andy Stone stated: “Meta does not have a stablecoin.” Nevertheless, it is still unclear whether the company is quietly developing some plan behind the scenes.
