👉 Bitcoin update expands blockchain use and reignites debate about its original purpose.
The next version of the Bitcoin Core software, scheduled for October 30, will increase the data limit of the OP_RETURN function, allowing for the storage of up to 4 megabytes per transaction. This measure eliminates the current restriction of 80 bytes, according to developer Gloria Zhao, in a post on GitHub.
The change, formalized by proposal MPR #32406 and supported by 31 developers, expands the potential of the blockchain for uses beyond financial transactions. As a result, documents, images, and other data can be recorded directly on the network, intensifying applications like Ordinals, which sparked controversy by allowing content such as NFTs and historical files.
