One could almost hear the flies buzzing. On Wednesday, June 4, newly elected German Chancellor Friedrich Merz was welcomed by the American president in Washington (United States). The two heads of state took advantage of this first meeting to lay the groundwork for a good understanding in the Oval Office. A mission that is likely to be much more sensitive than expected, as the American president made a more than inappropriate remark towards his German counterpart, reveals AFP.
June 6 is a very important date on the calendar. This is what Friedrich Merz wanted to remind his American counterpart during their first meeting. "It’s the anniversary of the D-Day when the Americans ended the war in Europe. And I think it’s in your hands, particularly, in ours…", began the German chancellor, who was unable to finish his sentence, immediately interrupted by Donald Trump. "It wasn’t a pleasant day for you," President Trump joked, implying the connection between the German chancellor and the Nazi regime. Friedrich remained stoic but did not lose his composure. "Mr. President, it allowed the liberation of my country from the Nazi dictatorship," he emphasized. "That’s true, that’s true," conceded his interlocutor, in a suddenly serious tone. "We know what we owe you," added the chancellor to ease the tension.
