The United States and China agreed to a temporary and significant reduction of their mutual tariffs for 90 days, starting from May 14, 2025. The United States will reduce its tariffs on Chinese products from 145% to 30%, while China will lower its tariffs on American products from 125% to 10% during this period.
This agreement marks a pause in the trade war between the two powers and aims to ease tensions, although it does not imply the total elimination of tariffs or deeper concessions. The United States will maintain tariffs on certain sectors such as automobiles, steel, aluminum, and pharmaceuticals, and seeks to pressure China on issues like fentanyl control.
Additionally, a permanent mechanism for bilateral consultations was established to continue negotiations and avoid future trade escalations. This temporary truce reflects an attempt by both parties to stabilize the trade relationship without yet resolving all underlying conflicts.
