US and China Resume Trade Talks in London, Shifting Focus to Export Controls

In the second round of negotiations taking place today in London, the United States and China are turning their attention from tariffs to export controls, specifically targeting key technologies and rare earth materials.

Both nations have recently taken steps to limit each other’s access to strategic components within their supply chains. The U.S., under policies stemming from the Trump era, has aimed to block China’s access to advanced semiconductors, jet engines, and certain industrial equipment and chemicals. In response, China has tightened its grip on rare earth exports—vital resources used in manufacturing everything from consumer electronics and vehicles to defence systems.
