The USA is cutting aid to Ukraine, so Ukraine has proposed something to Europe: you give me the money, I make the weapons. It was known that Ukraine had built a drone industry in response to the lack of aid. What was not known was that since Russia launched its large-scale invasion in 2022, the Ukrainian defense industry had experienced explosive growth, multiplying its productive capacity by 35, from $1 billion to $35 billion in annual potential.
The problem was that this 'potential' had no outlet due to a lack of funding. Until now.
The USA is reversing course. This was reported exclusively by the Wall Street Journal. The Trump administration has decided to redirect a key anti-drone defense technology, originally intended for Ukraine, to U.S. forces in the Middle East, a decision that marks a shift in the Pentagon's strategic priority and less involvement in the defense of Kyiv.
Specifically, it concerns special fuses for rockets from the Advanced Precision Kill Weapon System, vital for downing Russian drones, which will now be assigned to Air Force units in anticipation of potential confrontations with Iran or the Houthis in Yemen.
First, the criticisms. Although the measure is backed by emergency spending authorities and has been communicated to Congress, it has generated criticism for its possible negative impact on Ukraine's defensive capability and the lack of transparency regarding the actual urgency. Meanwhile, the administration has not requested additional funds for the assistance program to Ukraine, and high-ranking officials such as the Secretary of Defense have avoided key NATO meetings, insisting that Europe must take on a greater share of military support for Kyiv, while the United States focuses its attention on the Pacific.
