When we talk about "blockchain," we often think about transactions and tokens. But who verifies those transactions? Who keeps the network running? The answer is Nodes. Nodes are computers (servers, PCs) that run the blockchain software, store a complete or partial copy of the transaction history, and participate in the validation process. They are, literally, the backbone that supports the decentralization and security of the entire network.

* What is a Blockchain Node?

* Definition: A node is a participant in the blockchain network that maintains a copy of the distributed ledger and communicates with other nodes to maintain the consistency and validity of the network.

* Variety of Nodes: There are different types of nodes (full, light, miners/validators), each with specific functions.

* Key Functions of Nodes:

* 1. Transaction Validation: Nodes verify that all transactions are valid (e.g. sufficient funds, correct signatures) according to the rules of the protocol.

* 2. Block Verification: They check that the new blocks added to the chain follow all the consensus rules of the network.

* 3. Data Storage: Many nodes (especially full nodes) store a complete copy of the transaction history of the blockchain from its inception.

* 4. Information Propagation: They forward new transactions and blocks to other nodes in the network, ensuring that information is disseminated and kept synchronized.

* 5. Network Maintenance: By participating in this process of verification and propagation, nodes ensure that the network remains decentralized, operational, and resistant to censorship.

* Why Are They Critical for Decentralization?

* No Central Point of Failure: If there are many nodes distributed globally, the network does not rely on a single server or entity. If some nodes fail, the network continues to function.

* Resistance to Censorship: If a government or corporation tries to stop transactions, it would need to shut down a massive number of nodes worldwide, which is practically impossible in decentralized networks.

* Autonomous Verification: Anyone can run a node and verify the rules of the network for themselves, without having to trust a third party. This is the essence of "Don't trust, verify."

Nodes are the guardians of the integrity of the blockchain. The more independent and geographically distributed nodes there are, the stronger and more decentralized the network will be.
