The relationship has drastically deteriorated due to Musk's opposition to the new budget law pushed by Trump, which the president has called a "great and beautiful law".
Musk has called the bill a "repugnant abomination", "outrageous", "full of unnecessary spending" and has warned that it "will greatly increase the already gigantic budget deficit". He has also criticized that subsidies for oil and gas remain untouched while tax credits for electric vehicles, which benefit Tesla, are eliminated.
For his part, Trump has expressed his "great disappointment" with Musk, saying that he has "helped him a lot" and that he was "surprised" by Musk's criticism. He has hinted that Musk is upset about the removal of mandates for electric vehicles and that the businessman "missed" being in government.
The dispute has escalated with threats from Trump to cut subsidies and government contracts with Musk's companies (Starlink, SpaceX). Musk has responded defiantly, even stating that without him, Trump would have lost the 2024 elections
