Tensions between Washington and Beijing may be inching toward a diplomatic thaw as signs point to a potential phone call between former U.S. President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi . The Chinese Foreign Ministry issued a readout following a recent meeting between Trump envoy David Perdue and China’s top diplomat, Wang Yi.
According to the readout, Beijing accused the U.S. of acting on “groundless reasons” and undermining China’s “legitimate rights and interests.” Yet, it also highlighted a softer message from Trump’s camp — with Perdue reportedly stating Trump has “great respect” for Xi, and calling for both nations to “meet halfway” to reset bilateral ties.
“This is apparently Beijing trying to leave the impression that Trump wants to talk,” said Neo Wang, lead China economist at Evercore ISI. “Beijing publicly doing so indicates the phone call is drawing near.”
Wang added that the meeting is likely a trust-building step aimed at ensuring President Xi is not politically blindsided by any post-call rhetoric or actions from Trump.
Adding a layer of caution, U.S. Ambassador to China Nicholas Burns posted on X late Tuesday that he raised America’s priorities — including trade, fentanyl control, and illegal immigration — while stressing the importance of continued communication.
Notably, Trump and Xi last spoke in January, shortly before Trump assumed office for his second term. While Trump has recently expressed interest in reconnecting with Xi, experts believe Beijing will only proceed if there's assurance the conversation won't spiral into political theater.
