Author: Inna Golovacheva, the one who once sent a transaction with gas at 4 GWEI, and it is still in the mempool.
💨 What is Gas?
This is the fuel of the Ethereum blockchain. Not in the style of "95 or diesel?", but in the style of "do you want your transaction to go through? Pay!" Every action on the network, whether it's sending a token, minting an NFT, staking, swapping, play-to-earn, even winking at a contract, consumes gas.
🔥 How does it work?
You are not just sending a coin, you are asking tens of thousands of computers in the Ethereum network: "Guys, check it, record it, confirm it, and preferably quickly." And they go: "Sure, dear, but how much will you pay for this urgency?"
Gas consists of:
Gas Limit - how much you are willing to pay for execution (a limit in liters of fuel).
Gas Price (in GWEI) - the price per unit of this fuel (the real magic starts here).
🤕 Why can this be EXPENSIVE? In the blockchain, the queue is not on tickets.
It's an auction. Everyone wants their transaction to go through first: one is swapping a meme coin before a pump, another is minting NFT dog stickers in space, the third is launching a DeFi attack with a flash loan of $30 million. And each of them, all at once: "I will pay more. And I. And me too!"
Thus the Gas War is born.
💣 GAS WARS. the war for entry
This is when a hot launch occurs (NFT mint, drop, token sale), and thousands of crazed users simultaneously try to squeeze into one block. You set GWEI = 80, you get overtaken by those who set 120, you raise it to 150, they set 200. The block fills up in seconds.
As a result, your transaction hangs, the gas money burns, and only 3 bots with custom scripts get the NFT. You are rekt. And sad.
Who wins the Gas Wars?
1. Bots (they are faster, meaner, they don't blink).
2. Speedrun fans (those who knew about the mint in Discord a month in advance).
3. A random guy with $10K on gas fees (yes, he really exists).
🔧 How NOT to get burned on gas?
1. Check the Gas Tracker, websites like etherscan.io/gastracker show current prices.
2. Set limits wisely, don't chase the hype if you don't understand what you're paying for.
3. Wait for off-peak times. Night/early morning (UTC) can be cheaper.
4. Use Layer 2 (Arbitrum, Optimism, zkSync: the same actions, but gas is cheaper and less stressful).
🛑 Here’s something else.
If you are told: "Just press mint, it will set everything automatically," - check the gas. If you are told "it's cheap, just 0.02 ETH," - check the gas.
If you are told "the network is busy, but it should go through normally," - it's a LIE. It won't go through).
⚡️ Final tips on how to wear glasses.
Gas is like a tip for the network. Want to be served first - pay, but if you hesitate too long, you'll just get passed by, forgotten, and left without a JPEG.
And this is perhaps the most cryptocurrency feeling in the world.
