Do you remember that cryptocurrency created by the Venezuelan government that promised to be anchored to oil? Well, its story is quite particular and, to be honest, it generates many reflections for me.

In one of my previous posts, I asked myself whether it was possible to create a stable coin in Venezuela, and what most people told me was that this had already been attempted with the Petro and that it was an absolute failure since it was only used for purposes other than what was intended.💸

Born among expectations and promises ✨

When the Petro was launched in 2018, the idea was ambitious: a cryptocurrency that would help us overcome sanctions and stabilize our economy. There was talk of backing by reserves of oil, gold, and other resources. For many, including me, it generated curiosity. Could this be the solution? 🤔

The bumpy and doubtful road 🚧

However, from the beginning, the Petro faced numerous challenges. Transparency was a big question mark; there was never an independent audit that told us exactly how it was backed. Additionally, unlike other cryptos that we love for their decentralization, the Petro was always under government control. This, for many in the crypto community, went against the very essence of what a cryptocurrency is.

I remember when the government was trying to promote it for paying gasoline, taxes, or even as bonuses. It was a bit frustrating at times, wasn't it? Its real usability was limited and international acceptance was nearly nonexistent! Major platforms and many countries simply did not embrace it.

The final chapter and the disappearance 🪙

And well, if we add the corruption scandals that came to light in 2023, the little credibility that remained vanished. For me, that was a very hard blow to trust. Finally, at the beginning of this year, in 2024, the definitive closure of the Petro wallets on the Patria Platform was announced. Goodbye Petro! 👋

For me, the story of the Petro is an important reminder: in the crypto world, transparency, decentralization, and trust are fundamental pillars. It teaches us that it is not enough to create a currency; it needs an ecosystem to support it and, above all, the trust of its users.

Did you ever use the Petro?

What do you think of its history?

I would love to read your experiences and reflections in the comments! 👇
