Panama should allow ships wishing to transit through the Panama Canal to skip the line if they pay in BTC, says the city's mayor, Mayer Mizrachi. The mayor of Panama City, Mayer Mizrachi, has raised the idea of allowing ships transiting through the Panama Canal to pay in BTC to accelerate their passage.

Mizrachi proposed during a round table at the Bitcoin 2025 conference held in Las Vegas on May 29 that cargo ships could avoid the lines to cross the important maritime canal by paying in Bitcoins.

"We have a channel, what if an advantage could be obtained by paying in Bitcoins, if the passage of ships could be accelerated by paying in BTC?" suggested Mizrachi while speaking with two political leaders from El Salvador related to Bitcoin, Max Keiser and Stacy Herbert. The director of Bitcoin Beach in El Salvador, Mike Panama's son, has been at the forefront of Bitcoin adoption lately, as he recently approved a measure allowing the use of cryptocurrencies for public payments, including taxes, fines, and municipal fees.

Payments with Bitcoins for the Panama Canal are one of the several ideas Mizrachi has presented in recent weeks while exploring how his country can follow El Salvador's example in the adoption of BTC.

He has also promoted the idea of establishing a Bitcoin reserve for Panama City, where more than half of Panama's gross domestic product is generated, and pointed out in the round table that he would not need legislative approval to adopt such a measure. Peter moderated the round table.
