Fourteen days ago, I became a victim of a $600 robbery in XRP.
I was just starting out in the world of cryptocurrencies, as I was intrigued by the topic of digital investment. Unfortunately, this bad experience has made me reconsider whether it's worth continuing down this path, at least for now.
Despite the loss, I am grateful that it wasn't a larger amount. This situation could have been much worse if I had a bigger investment. I want to share this experience as a warning to those considering investing in cryptocurrencies.
In my case, I believe that the lack of experience played a significant role. I bought a cold wallet (offline), thinking it was one of the safest ways to protect my funds. I never shared my keys, nor the 24-word recovery phrase, which I have always kept written in a safe place. That's why it shocks and intrigues me how they managed to access and move my funds.
This leaves me with a very valuable lesson:
Never share your keys or your recovery phrase with anyone, under any circumstances.
Whenever possible, keep your devices and wallets disconnected from the internet.
Change your passwords frequently and stay informed about good security practices.
If you are just starting in this world, be very careful. Security is essential, and mistakes can cost you real money. I learned this lesson the hard way, and I hope my experience helps others avoid going through the same.
