Elon Musk, the owner of X (formerly Twitter), has announced a new messaging app called XChat. The app includes features like end-to-end encryption, disappearing messages, and the ability to send files without a phone number.
XChat is built using the Rust programming language, and Musk’s team says it includes “Bitcoin-style encryption.” But that phrase has left many in the crypto space confused.
What’s the Issue?
Experts point out that $BTC doesn’t use encryption for transactions. Instead, it uses digital signatures to verify them. All data shared across Bitcoin nodes is actually unencrypted, meaning anyone can see it and interact with the network.
Ian Miers, a computer science professor and privacy expert, criticized the claim, saying:
> “Bitcoin uses signatures, not encryption. Saying 'Bitcoin-style encryption' doesn’t make sense.”
He also noted that using Rust doesn’t automatically mean the app is secure.
Market Reaction
The crypto market didn’t react much to the news. Bitcoin (BTC) stayed flat around $105,000, after falling 3% last week, according to CoinDesk.
Final Thoughts
While XChat sounds promising, the crypto community is urging caution. Buzzwords like “Bitcoin-style encryption” may sound cool—but they don’t guarantee real privacy or security.
