Record Losses for the Bank of Japan
⚡️ The unrealized losses of the Bank of Japan from government bonds reached $198 billion in the fiscal year 2024, marking a new record.
⚡️ These losses have tripled compared to the previous year, which recorded around $66 billion.
⚡️ The reason? The rapid increase in bond yields:
The yield on 10-year Japanese bonds has doubled to ~1.5%
And the yield on 30-year bonds jumped ~70 basis points to ~2.5%
⚡️ The rise in yields over the past two months has increased pressure on the Bank of Japan, with an unprecedented acceleration in the pace of paper losses.
