Elon Musk has officially stepped down from his role as a special government employee leading the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) under President Donald Trump. His 130-day tenure concluded on May 29, 2025, as per the legal limit for such appointments .

Musk announced his departure on his social media platform, X, expressing gratitude to President Trump for the opportunity and stating that the DOGE mission would continue to strengthen over time . However, his exit follows public criticism of the administration's "Big, Beautiful Bill," which Musk argued contradicted DOGE's cost-cutting objectives .

During his tenure, DOGE claimed to have saved $175 billion through federal budget cuts, falling short of Muskโ€™s ambitious $2 trillion target. Many of these reported savings have been scrutinized for lack of verifiability . Musk's departure also coincides with legal challenges; a federal judge has allowed a lawsuit to proceed against him, alleging unauthorized actions in his role with DOGE, while dropping claims against President Trump .
