Elon Musk Resigns from $DOGE Post: “It Was an Uphill Battle”
In a surprising move, billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk has officially stepped down from his role at the U.S. Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), describing the position as “an uphill battle” and admitting the mission was far more difficult than he had anticipated.
Musk made the announcement on May 29, 2025, via a post on his social media platform X (formerly Twitter). In his message, he said, “I tried to make things better, but the system is stronger than I expected.” His resignation marks the end of a 130-day tenure within President Donald Trump’s administration, during which he aimed to overhaul federal spending and streamline government operations.
A Controversial Tenure with Modest Results
Musk was appointed earlier this year to lead DOGE with a bold promise to cut $2 trillion in federal spending. However, by the time of his departure, the total savings achieved amounted to approximately $150 billion. His efforts were met with fierce political resistance, widespread criticism, and numerous legal challenges.
One of his most controversial actions was the dismissal of over 260,000 federal employees, a move that triggered nationwide protests, lawsuits, and court orders requiring many of those workers to be reinstated.
Clashing Visions Within the Administration
Musk didn’t hold back in criticizing parts of the Trump administration’s economic policy—particularly a proposed budget plan that included massive tax cuts and increases in defense spending. Musk argued that such measures contradicted the core objectives of DOGE.
"You can’t talk about reducing the federal deficit while injecting billions into unchecked projects," he stated, alluding to what he saw as fiscal irresponsibility within the broader government agenda.
What’s Next for Musk and DOGE
Despite stepping down from his official role, Musk noted that he would continue offering informal support to the administration while shifting his focus back to his private ventures, including Tesla, SpaceX, and Neuralink.
In the wake of his resignation, the White House announced that Amy Gleason would serve as the interim director of $DOGE DOGE
until a permanent replacement is named.
Musk’s departure raises questions about the future direction of DOGE$DOGE and whether the department’s ambitious reform agenda can move forward without one of its most high-profile leaders.
