In 2021, during the NFT craze, someone actually bought a JPEG image of a gray pixelated 'rock' for $120,000.
What was it? It was one of the EtherRocks — a collection of 100 identical pixel images in different shades of gray. Each of them was simply called 'rock' and had no function, utility, or meaning. The project's slogan: 'These rocks do nothing but be rocks.'
Why did this happen?
The NFT market was at the peak of hype, and rarity + meme status = $$$.
People bought them to show off on Twitter and Telegram, as well as for the phrase 'I have a rock worth 100k.'
Later, some of these rocks depreciated to almost zero!!!
