The U.S. trade court ruled that Trump's comprehensive tariffs exceeded his authority: What will happen next?
The federal court in the U.S. blocked President Donald Trump's comprehensive tariff measures, dealing a significant blow to his core economic policy.
The Court of International Trade, based in Manhattan, New York, ruled that the emergency act cited by the White House did not grant the president the power to unilaterally impose tariffs on almost all countries.
The court pointed out that the U.S. Constitution explicitly grants Congress the exclusive power to manage commercial relations with other countries, and the president's duty to protect the economy does not replace this power.
Minutes after the ruling was announced, the Trump administration filed an appeal.
This lawsuit was filed by the nonpartisan Liberty Justice Center on behalf of five small businesses affected by tariffs on imported goods, representing the first major legal challenge to Trump's 'Day of Liberation' tariffs.
New York is one of the 12 states involved in the lawsuit, and Attorney General Letitia James welcomed the court's ruling.
She said, "The law is clear: the president does not have the authority to unilaterally impose taxes arbitrarily."
"These tariffs represent a huge tax burden for working families and American businesses, and if continued, will lead to higher inflation, economic harm to businesses of all sizes, and unemployment nationwide."
U.S. stock market futures also rose following the court ruling. Futures are contracts to buy or sell an underlying asset at a future date, reflecting the market's trading trends at the opening.
The political response in the United States was swift, with Democrats welcoming the court's ruling.
"From the very beginning, I argued that Donald Trump's claim that he could unilaterally impose high new tariffs on imported goods is a serious distortion of the Constitution that nearly renders it unrecognizable," said Senator Ron Wyden from Oregon.
Gregory W. Meeks, the chief Democratic member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, stated that this ruling confirms what people have long known - "These tariffs are an illegal abuse of executive power."
