The Scalability Dilemma in Ethereum: Why is it a Problem?
Ethereum, the "world computer", is an incredible platform, but it faces a major challenge: scalability. Currently, the Ethereum mainnet can only process a limited number of transactions per second. This is due to its design, which prioritizes security and decentralization above all else. Imagine a highway with only two lanes: during peak hours, traffic comes to a standstill and tolls skyrocket. Thus, the high demand on Ethereum often results in congestion and high gas fees, making transactions slow and expensive. This is the famous "blockchain trilemma", where it is difficult to optimize the three pillars (security, decentralization, scalability) simultaneously. Understanding this problem is the first step to appreciating the ingenious solutions being developed for the future of Ethereum.
