Why separate satoshis from bitcoin?
Imagine this: one day someone suggests abolishing cents in a dollar. Like: "Come on, why bother with those small change, let's just deal in dollars! 0.99? No, only 1 or more!". This is exactly what John Carvalho is proposing with bitcoin. Seriously.
John Carvalho, a guy from the crypto party Synonym, stated: "Let's get rid of satoshis — the smallest particles of bitcoin. They are just a nuisance to everyone!". And he submitted a proposal called BIP-177 (Bitcoin Improvement Proposal). His idea: instead of satoshis we will have "bitcoins" with a lowercase 'b'. One btc will now supposedly equal 100 million of these "bitcoins".
But... WHY?
Carvalho says that people find it hard to understand all these 0.00004231 BTC. It's better to say you have 4,231 "btc", right? Convenient, isn't it?
It's roughly like saying: “Don't write 0.99 $, better write 99 cents, and even better — let's just call it ‘dollars’ and forget about ‘cents’ entirely!”. A genius of economics, no less.
The idea was supported by Jack Dorsey — the same one who created Twitter and has a beard like the guru from the movie. He claims that "people don't like decimal fractions". Well of course, Jack, especially when buying coffee for 0.0000124 BTC. It feels like a game of financial twister.
Criticism (and our favorite sarcasm)
Against it — almost the entire crypto community. People are outraged: “What do you mean? Do you want to erase the name of Satoshi Nakamoto — the creator of bitcoin — from history?”.
It’s like proposing to replace the word “cents” with “micro-dollar” just because someone doesn’t like how it sounds. Or exclaiming: “Let's remove George from the bill — it's hard for people to pronounce ‘Washington’!”
And one more nuance: technically, nothing will change. They will simply replace the text “0.0001 BTC” with “10,000 btc” (with a lowercase 'b', because karma won’t allow writing with a capital letter). But the main thing is — let it look “simpler”, and what mess will be in people's heads — that’s just a minor detail.
Honestly? It's like another “redesign” in Facebook: it was inconvenient — now it’s even more confusing. The proposal so far is just an idea. But as we see, it has created more noise than Elon Musk's “NFT drop”.
Want to change something in bitcoin? Alright. But don’t start with the basic unit of measurement. Because tomorrow we’ll be told that bitcoin itself is just a big “meme”, and it’s better to switch to something simpler. For example, TikTokCoin.
