Buterin: Ethereum can increase the gas limit by 10–100 times

Co-founder Vitalik Buterin stated that the L1 chain team is considering the possibility of significantly increasing the gas limit — from 10 to 100 times the current values.

📊 Current gas limit:

🔵 ~36 million units (according to YCharts)

🔵 A year ago: 30 million

🔵 Potential goal: 360–3600 million

What is the gas limit?

It is the maximum amount of computation available for transactions and smart contracts in a block. It affects:

1️⃣ Network throughput

2️⃣ Fee size

3️⃣ Resilience to overloads

📌 The gas limit was last increased in February 2024 — from 30 to 32 million, without a hard fork (51% of validators voted 'for').

🎯 Why is this needed:

🔵 More transactions in a block

🔵 Lower fees under high load

🔵 Support for scaling without complete reliance on L2
