Microsoft is considered the most valuable company today, holding the top spot among companies with the highest market capitalization. This has been a recent development, as until not long ago, Apple held this position. Microsoft is primarily known for being the developer of Windows, the most popular operating system, but it also operates in other sectors. Now Microsoft has announced that they have decided to make their Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL) Open Source, responding to the community after nearly a decade.
There are three main operating systems found on computers and laptops around the world, these being Windows, macOS, and Linux, ranked in terms of popularity. In the case of Windows, more than 70% of computers use it, followed by just over 10% with macOS, 4% with Linux, and the rest are various operating systems that make up a minority, such as Chrome OS which does not reach 2%.
Microsoft makes WSL Open Source, so it can now be installed and will allow modifications from the community.
The success of Windows is due to several factors, as despite being a paid operating system unlike Linux, it is generally easier to use and learn. Additionally, it has expanded in schools, businesses, and all types of institutions. Almost everyone knows how to use Windows, but we couldn't say the same about Linux. Interestingly, Microsoft developed what is known as WSL (Windows Subsystem for Linux), which is a compatibility layer that allows running Linux binary files in ELF format natively on its operating system.
