Solana is going for the world record. Goodbye to "Proof of History"
New REVOLUTION "Alpenglow" promises INSTANT FINALITY and a BOOM in #sol
The developers of #solana are preparing what could be the most ambitious core upgrade of the blockchain to date, called #Alpenglow
This proposal aims to replace the current systems of Proof of History (PoH) and Tower BFT, with a redesigned consensus protocol focused on near-instant finality and responsiveness.
The infrastructure company Anza (a subsidiary of Solana Labs) introduced Alpenglow, which intends to replace Solana's distinctive Proof of History (its "pre-recorded clock") and the Tower BFT voting mechanism.
The current systems (PoH and Tower BFT) are considered relatively slow and complex, with Tower BFT requiring multiple rounds of voting and PoH relying on a cryptographic clock that can cause delays in coordination. Alpenglow simplifies this with faster and more direct communication and a more agile consensus.
New Two-Part Architecture:
Voter: Will manage block finalization, aiming to confirm transactions in just 100-150 milliseconds (according to simulations). Finality means that a transaction is permanently confirmed and immutable on the blockchain.
Rotor: A data relay protocol that will transmit transactions more quickly and efficiently than the current Turbine mechanism of Solana.
Will Alpenglow be the definitive leap that propels Solana to speed supremacy in the blockchain world, or will it face unexpected challenges in its implementation?
