Peer-to-peer (P2P) scams are fraudulent schemes where scammers exploit digital money transfer platforms like Cash App, Zelle, Venmo, or PayPal to trick users into sending money. These platforms are designed for quick and easy transactions between individuals, but this convenience also makes them a target for fraud. Common tactics include posing as fake buyers or sellers, overpayment scams, phishing links that mimic real apps, or emotional manipulation through fake online relationships. Since P2P transactions are often instant and irreversible, recovering funds after a scam is extremely difficult.
To protect yourself, always verify the identity of the person you're transacting with and avoid sending money to strangers. Be cautious if someone asks you to use the “Friends & Family” option for purchases, sends you unsolicited payment requests, or pressures you to act urgently. Never share your password, one-time passcodes (OTPs), or sensitive account details with anyone claiming to be customer support. If something feels suspicious, report the user immediately and avoid further contact. Awareness and caution are your best defenses against P2P scams.
