In a harrowing event that’s sending shockwaves through the crypto world, an attempted kidnapping targeting the family of a French crypto exchange co-founder unfolded in Paris on May 13.

According to local reports and surveillance footage, three masked assailants ambushed a woman and her child, attempting to force them into a van. In a dramatic turn, the woman’s husband bravely intervened, sustaining head injuries in the process. The family’s cries for help triggered nearby bystanders to intervene, ultimately causing the attackers to flee.

The victims, reportedly connected to the co-founder of crypto firm Paymium, were treated at a hospital and are in stable condition. Paris police’s armed robbery unit has taken over the investigation.

This isn’t an isolated incident—France has witnessed a surge in crypto-linked kidnappings in recent months. From million-euro ransoms to targeted attacks on executives, the need for enhanced digital and physical security in crypto is more pressing than ever.

The blockchain may be decentralized—but the risks are very real.
