Amidst the increasing global adoption of digital currencies, several cafes and restaurants around the world are starting to accept payments with crypto assets such as Bitcoin, Ethereum, and stablecoins like USDT and USDC. This move reflects a shift towards a more modern and decentralized payment system as consumer interest in crypto grows.

Dubai, one of the most crypto-friendly cities, is in the spotlight. Cafes like CÉ LA VI Dubai and MetaTerrace have accepted Bitcoin and Ethereum as payment methods. Even virtual restaurants like Doge Burger offer payment options with Dogecoin, Shiba Inu, and XRP. Not only that, Bake N More, a local cafe in the city, now also serves direct crypto transactions.

In Europe, Prague is known for its legendary cafe, Bitcoin Coffee, which only accepts Bitcoin through the Lightning Network. This cafe is located in the Paralelní Polis area, a gathering place for the crypto and libertarian community.

Meanwhile, London shows a similar trend. Several cafes and pubs such as Chai Ada, Sawmill Café, and even the BrewDog Canary Wharf branch have integrated crypto into their payment systems, including Bitcoin and Ethereum.

Not to be outdone, according to Bitcoinist.com, cities like Lisbon (Portugal) and São Paulo (Brazil) are also on the list. In Lisbon, Crypto Café not only accepts crypto payments but also serves as a gathering place for the Web3 community. In Brazil, Crypto Coffee offers a coffee menu while accepting Bitcoin, Ethereum, and USDT.

In the United States, applications like Blackbird have even introduced a restaurant loyalty system using the stablecoin USDC, allowing customers to earn points and make digital payments at over 150 restaurants in major cities like New York and Los Angeles.

In general, the types of crypto most commonly accepted include:

  • Bitcoin (BTC)

  • Ethereum (ETH)

  • USDT / USDC

  • Litecoin (LTC)

  • XRP

  • Dogecoin (DOGE)

With more and more merchants accepting crypto, this trend is expected to expand further into other hospitality industries, although it still faces challenges such as price volatility and varying regulations in each country.

The payment system using coins has also been used in Bali. A cafe used a coin payment system and named its menu items uniquely inspired by cryptocurrency. However, this payment system did not last long after a change of ownership, and indeed, payments outside of the Indonesian rupiah are not permitted.
