In the USA, a crypto group that stole $263 million has been uncovered.
The US Department of Justice has charged 12 participants in a RICO case (a law aimed at combating organized crime). They are accused of stealing cryptocurrency, money laundering, extortion, and home break-ins.
The suspects found victims through databases, called on behalf of banks and exchanges, obtained asset transfers, and then laundered them through mixers and VPNs.
The money was spent lavishly:
- up to $500,000 a night at clubs;
- 28 supercars costing $3.8 million each;
- private jets, elite housing, and gifts.
The main organizer, 20-year-old Malone Lam, coordinated the gang's activities even from prison.
The group is also linked to the theft of $243 million from Genesis in 2024.
