$TRUMP Claims #India Offered Zero-Tariff Deal — But Holds Back on Commitment
A Bold Trade Offer from India?
Donald Trump has stirred headlines again by claiming that India offered to eliminate all tariffs on U.S. goods—potentially a major breakthrough in bilateral trade. “They’re willing to cut 100% of their tariffs for the United States,” Trump said in a Fox News interview, labeling India as a prime example of the trade barriers he's aiming to dismantle.
Despite the striking claim, Trump added, “I’m in no rush,” suggesting that formalizing such a deal isn’t imminent. He insisted that “everybody wants to make a deal with us,” but noted he wouldn’t negotiate with everyone just for the sake of it.
India Responds with Caution
India, however, poured cold water on the optimism. External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar emphasized that no deal has been finalized. “These are complicated negotiations,” he said. “Any trade deal has to be mutually beneficial. Until that is done, any judgment would be premature.”
The minister’s remarks indicate that while trade talks continue, a “zero-tariff” agreement is still far from reality.
Trade as a Diplomatic Tool
Trump also suggested he’s using trade as a lever to ease geopolitical tensions. He claimed that trade promises played a role in brokering a ceasefire understanding between India and Pakistan following recent unrest.
“I’m using trade to settle scores and make peace,” he said, while also referencing broader efforts to reset trade dynamics globally.
A Larger Strategy in Motion
The Trump administration is reportedly preparing to reset import duties for key partners in the next few weeks, potentially reshaping global trade flows. Talks with China have already led to substantial tariff reductions on both sides.
As Trump walks a fine line between economic aggression and diplomatic strategy, his comments highlight a high-stakes game where trade is both a weapon and a peace offering.
