The U.S. Attorney's Office has charged 12 suspects with the theft of bitcoins worth more than $263 million, which belonged to a creditor of the bankrupt Genesis company.
According to the U.S. Department of Justice, most of the suspects were arrested this week in California, while two others are hiding abroad, reportedly in Dubai. The charges against the criminal group include racketeering, fraud, money laundering, and obstruction of justice. The DOJ press release states that the primary incident of theft occurred on August 18, 2024, when Malone Lam, known as 'Anne Hathaway' and '$$$', along with accomplices, stole 4,100 bitcoins (worth about $230 million at the time) from one of Genesis's creditors. The fraudsters used social engineering methods, posing as employees of Google and the cryptocurrency exchange Gemini, to convince the victim to disable two-factor authentication and transfer funds to a crypto wallet controlled by them. Other figures involved in the crypto asset theft case include Jeandiel Serrano, known by the alias 'VersaceGod', and Marlon Ferro, who, according to investigators, also participated in home burglaries to steal hardware crypto wallets. Prosecutors claim that the fraudsters used the stolen funds to purchase luxury items and expensive entertainment, through which they attempted to launder the stolen crypto assets. Earlier, the American cryptocurrency exchange Coinbase publicly acknowledged the fact of a hack related to bribing employees and contractors working in support services outside the U.S. — primarily in India, the Philippines, and Japan.
