Brazil ranks among the most corrupt countries in the world, and in recent weeks, the dominant topic has been a massive scandal involving alleged embezzlement that could reach USD 48 billion. The fraud schemes were reportedly orchestrated by unions, and in one case, the brother of President Lula is said to be one of the main figures involved.
What stands out is the complete silence from the Supreme Federal Court (STF), which has yet to make any public statement on the matter. This contrasts sharply with the Court’s aggressive stance in cases involving former President Jair Bolsonaro — including accusations of whale harassment, unsubstantiated claims related to the Marielle Franco case, and his refusal to take the COVID-19 vaccine — all significantly less consequential issues.
Given the gravity of the facts and the magnitude of the amounts involved, what becomes evident is a troubling disparity in how cases are handled, raising concerns about the STF's commitment to fighting corruption.
