Bitcoin Pizza: The $100,000,000 Lunch
Meet Laszlo Hanyecz—the man forever etched in crypto history for making what many call the most expensive pizza purchase of all time.
Back in 2010, Laszlo posted on a crypto forum:
"I'll pay 10,000 BTC for two pizzas."
At the time, 10,000 BTC was worth roughly $25. A fellow user took him up on the offer, ordered two Papa John's pizzas, and had them delivered to Laszlo’s home in Florida.
Laszlo, using a command-line Bitcoin wallet, transferred the 10,000 BTC. Just like that, he completed what is now considered the first real-world transaction using Bitcoin.
Fast forward to today:
Those same 10,000 BTC would be worth over $1 billion (with BTC trading near $100,000).
Every year on May 22, the crypto community celebrates Bitcoin Pizza Day—a lighthearted reminder of how far the space has come.
But one question still lingers:
Has Laszlo ever forgiven himself?
Maybe he has. Maybe he hasn’t.
What’s certain is that most people can't imagine what it feels like to spend billions... on lunch.
