According to Cointelegraph, a new wave of deepfake-based phishing attacks is targeting U.S. federal and state officials — and even the Web3 space isn’t safe.

🕵️ FBI Warning (May 15):

Hackers are impersonating senior U.S. government figures using AI-generated deepfake voices and messages to trick victims into clicking malicious links. These links lead to fake platforms meant to steal sensitive data like passwords and account access.

🚨 What’s Happening?

Fake messages from trusted officials

Hacked accounts used to deceive other officials and contacts

Victims lured to install malware via phishing links

Contact details stolen to impersonate & request funds/info

Web3 Also Under Attack:

On May 13, Polygon co-founder Sandeep Nailwal revealed he was targeted in a deepfake scam!

Hackers hijacked the Telegram of Polygon Ventures lead Shreyansh, faked a Zoom call with deepfakes of Nailwal and others, and tried to trick people into installing a malicious SDK.

Nailwal’s Advice:

❌ Never install anything from unverified sources

✅ Use a separate device for your crypto wallets

⚠️ Push for platforms like Telegram to introduce reporting tools

More victims: Web3 veteran Dovey Wan also reported being deepfaked in a similar scam.

FBI Safety Tips:

🔒 Verify identities — don’t trust the display name alone

✉️ Double-check sender emails and message details

🖼️ Look for unrealistic visuals or audio glitches

⚠️ Avoid clicking unknown links or downloading files

🔐 Always enable 2FA or MFA for all accounts

Stay alert. These scams are getting smarter — don’t let AI impersonators fool you.
